Chennai, November 15, 2011: We learnt with great shock and sorrow the sudden demise of Dr. Arun Dandekar, Chairman, Board of Management, All India Beekeepers Association at Pune.

Dr. Dandekar, after he retired from the academic field, joined the Association at the request of late Shri S.G. Shende to assist him in the Association's work at its Pune office. He worked for the Association's development with wholeheartred devotion and tenacity.

Dr. Dandekar was a Professor of Zoology at the Modern College, Pune. For his doctorate degree he researched the biology of the giant honey bee, Apis dorsata. He had also been a selfless social worker, and was a Melvin Jones Fellow of the Lions Club.

Following is the condolence message from Dr. Pardeep Kumar Chhuneja, Executive Secretary of the Association.

-----

'A hell has broken on all the members of the All India Beekeepers' Association on hearing the sad demise of Dr. A.B. Dandekar, Chairman of the Board of Management of the Association. Dr. Dandekar had been serving the Association selflessly with dedication for the past more than five years and in fact, at Pune Head Quarters of the Association, he was running the show single-handed. His contributions towards the beekeepers interests have been plenty. I always found him concerned about the beekeepers, beekeeping and the Association. We had been in touch with each other on phone for the Association matters and other beekeeping programmes. In fact, when I extended him an invitation on phone in February for participation in the national level Honey Festival cum Beekeeping Experience Exchange Workshop, he informed that he was not keeping good health and hence could not participate.

In last August, when I convened an informal meeting on the Association matters at the Central Bee Research and Training Institute, Pune, I found him quite passionate in strengthening the Association for the welfare of beekeepers and beekeeping.

His sudden demise has saddened the beekeeping fraternity in India. I feel that this is an irreparable loss for the Association, and of course for his family. In the capacity of the Executive Secretary of the Association, and on my personal behalf, on behalf of the whole of the Association and also on behalf of Dr. N.P. Goyal, who is also indisposed, I express condolences on the sad demise of Dr. Dandekar and express my tributes to him. I pray the Almighty that the pious soul of Dr. Dandekar rests in peace and provide strength to the family members to bear the irreparable loss.
