Pune, April 15, 2008 (from Daily Excelsior September 26, 2005 and March 16, 2008): The Union Government was making sustained efforts to promote agriculture and its allied sectors including horticulture, apiculture, fish farming and dairy farming, informed minister of State for Planning and Development, Usman Majid speaking during the inauguration of a beekeeping awareness and training camp in September 2005 to the rural people under the Rural Employment Generation Programme by the Jammu & Kashmir Khadi and Village Industries Board at its Beekeeping Center, Ajus, Bandipora.

Pune, April 14, 2008 (compiled by: MCS):  Beekeeping in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka was a thriving industry till 1980s. Apis cerana indica was kept here and most of the honey produced was from the extrafloral nectar abundantly available in rubber plantations in the nearby areas.

Pune, April 13, 2008 (compiled by: MCS): Studies on the economics of beekeeping are rare in India. Recently I came across a paper dealing with this subject. It concerns the beekeeping in the Pithoragarh district of Uttaranchal. The district has the largest number of beekeepers in the state and a majority of them practice migratory beekeeping. Presumably all of them kept Apis mellifera.
