Pune, March 30, 2008 (sources: The Economic Times, Thaindian News and The Hindu, March 2008): Eight research institutions in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu will implement a 3-year network project on “Morphometry and Phytogeography of Honey Bees and Stingless Bees", sanctioned recently by the National Resource Development Board of the Department of Biotechnology.

Apis mellifera Genome Sequenced

Pune January 11, 2007 (revised: February 29, 2008; compiled by MCS). The international science journal Nature published on October 26, 2006 a report of "the Honeybee Genome Sequencing Consortium" (HGSC) on the genome sequence of the western honey bee, Apis mellifera. HGSC is an international collaborative group of scientists and organizations, formed in 2002 mainly at the initiative of Dr. Gene Robinson, Department of Entomology, University of Illinois, Urbana, Daniel B. Weaver, Bee Power, Navasota, Texas and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The work of the Consortium formed a high priority ranking in the comparative genomics program of the National Human Genome Research Institute of the National Institute of Health, USA.

Archaeologists Excavate Ancient Bee Hives In Israel

Pune, January 21, 2008 (compiled by: MCS): In the last summer excavations at Tel Rehov in Israel's Beth Shean Valley, Archaeologists of the Jerusalem Institute of Archaeology, Hebrew University, discovered the earliest apiary of about 30 intact cylindrical unbaked clay hives along with ancient honey combs and beeswax (EurekAlert, Public release, September 3, 2007).
